In honor of “May Is National Masturbation Month”, we’ve compiled a non-exhaustive list of movies that contain memorable masturbation scenes. Sex scenes abound in movies, but not often of the solo sort. (And we’re talking about regular ol’ movies, not porn.) So in case you’d ever like to have your own home movie marathon (or want to be sure which ones to avoid when watching with the parents) here are some selections you can check out.
They’re listed chronologically starting with older movies and progressing to more recent ones. Have any that we missed? Got a favorite we overlooked? Let us know and we’ll update. Happy viewing!
Last Tango in Paris (1972) – Maria Schneider and Marlon Brando get busy with the boffing.
Portnoy’s Complaint (1972) — The Philip Roth book on which the movie was based broke barriers in it’s frank discussion of a teenage wankaholic. Not all of that makes it to the screen but, for better or worse, they included the liver episode. Possibly a precursor to the famous American Pie scene?
Amarcord (1973) – Featuring a humorous group masturbation scene where the guys shout out the names of their fantasy girlfriends.
Being There (1979) – Shirley Maclaine goes at it in this lengthy masturbation scene.
The Blue Lagoon (1980) — Coming of age classic features frustrated Christopher Atkins pleasuring himself…and getting caught in the act by Brooke Shields.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) — Teenage vixen Phoebe Cates inspires the bathroom action.
The Right Stuff (1983) – Two astronauts have to provide semen samples for the doctors. Man astronaut training is tough.
Risky Business (1983) – A frustrated Tom Cruise can’t seem to stop his hand from travelling south. It appears he decides to quit however, and look at all the trouble he got into. Lesson learned!
9 ½ Weeks (1986) — Female masturbation realistically portrayed.
Matador (1986) – The opening masturbation scene sets the tone for this film about sex and death.
Leolo (1992) – A boyhood masturbation scene involving liver (again) and another involving a chicken. Hmmm.
Spanking the Monkey (1994) — The title says it all. It’s a movie about frustration, lust, lack of privacy, and well…yes, you guessed it.
Threesome (1994) — Provocative movie that explores sexuality and relationships and Lara Flynn Boyle masturbating.
The Doom Generation (1995) — Independent film legend Greg Araki delivers a voyeuristic view of a beat off session.
The Truth About Cats and Dogs (1996) — A heated phone conversation turns into a masturbation scene.
Nowhere (1997) — Son beats it in the shower. Mom bangs on the door. C’mon mom, give a guy a break.
Happiness (1998) — There’s at least two masturbation scenes in this somewhat heavy movie.
Pleasantville (1998) — Often described as a “beautiful” masturbation scene. Check it out and see for yourself.
Psycho (1998) – Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot remake of the Alfred Hitchcock classic. Psycho killer Norman Bates wanks while peeping on a hotel guest. The original didn’t suggest much masturbating, but the remake adds some sound effects which do.
The Slums of Beverly Hills — (1998) Natasha Lyonne tries out her cousin’s vibrator.
There’s Something About Mary (1998) — Another of the classics. Ben Stiller is convinced not to go on a date with a “loaded gun” and relieves himself in the bathroom. Hilarity ensues. Need hair gel anyone??
American Beauty (1999) – A hot shower, cheerleaders, rose petals…need we say more.
American Pie (1999) – Probably the most famous movie masturbation scene of them all…the famous apple pie violation.
Better Than Chocolate (1999) – A mother stumbles across a box of sex toys.
Coming Soon (1999)– A surprisingly realistic performance of hot tub masturbation in this teen comedy about sex from a young women’s perspective.
American Pie 2 (2001) — Our hero Jim’s unfortunate and comically clumsy mishap with jerking it, superglue, and a porno tape.
Life as a House (2001) — Hayden Christensen uses some risky and not-recommended techniques to get off in the bedroom closet.
Mulholland Drive (2001) — Disturbing. Confusing. Surreal. Creepy. That’s not just Naomi Watts’ masturbation scene. That’s director David Lynch’s entire movie. And we mean that in a good way.
Y tu Mama Tambien (2001) — Two buddies beat off on adjacent swimming pool diving boards. Refreshing for its candid and unselfconscious look at mutual JO.
Auto-Focus (2002) – Greg Kinnear (playing Bob Crane of Hogan’s Heroes) and Willem Dafoe get to it.
Secretary (2002) — Often heralded as one of the best masturbation portrayals by an actress (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Where’s the Oscar??
40 Days and 40 Nights (2002) – Josh Harnett is trying desperately to go without sex of any kind. An encounter with Shannyn Sossamon ends up with her masturbating in a different kind of way.
Spun! (2003) – John Leguizamo’s goes at it naked except for a sock.
Kinsey (2004) — Liam Neeson has a solo scene in his portayal of the sex research legend.
40 Year Old Virgin (2005) — Comic scene complete with mood music and candles. Lots of self love goin on here.
Jarhead (2005) — Soldier Jake Gyllenhaal gives himself some self relief.
Babel (2006) – A brief masturbation scene featuring a young Moroccan boy who had been spying on his sister.
Shortbus (2006) — An exploration of autofellatio.
Smiley Face (2007) — Stoner movie from cult director Greg Araki. Danny Masterson takes a go with a skull (??).
Black Swan (2010) — Natalie Portman gets phycho sexual.

Ultimate Guide? Not unless you include “The Squid and the Whale.” I haven’t felt the same about the library since.
